18.preview – Everything you need to know about the 2018 Open at CrossFit Hoboken

Happy Open season, athletes! It’s the most wonderful time of the CrossFit year—time again to test yourself against the global CrossFit community.

For the next 5 weeks we’ll be treated to 5 brand new, never-before-seen workouts courtesy of CrossFit Games Director Dave Castro and CrossFit HQ, not to mention some of the best, most exciting moments of competition and camaraderie that you’ll experience at CrossFit Hoboken. The Open is truly an electric time of year to be in the gym.

The CrossFit Hoboken staff has lots in store for the 2018 Open season, and this is your go-to guide for everything you need to know. If you can’t find an answer to your question below, feel free to ask a coach or shoot us an email at info@crossfithoboken.com.

 

The Open—what is it?

If you’ve read this far and you still don’t know what The Open is, good for you for sticking with us this long. But here, now, is an explanation in a few nutshells:

The Open is a worldwide competition comprising five workouts over five weeks. Open workouts are identified by their year and the order in which they are released, so it kicks off with 18.1 and wraps up with 18.5.

The workouts are announced at 8 PM ET every Thursday throughout the five weeks. Tune in to games.crossfit.com or the CrossFit Facebook page for the live stream of the official Open announcement—they’re really fun to watch and are a great way to get excited about the workout.

The announcements take place at a different location each week, and two (or more) Games-level athletes perform the workout live. After the workout is released, athletes who have registered for The Open have until 8 PM ET/5 PM PT on the following Monday to submit their scores online or via the CrossFit Games app.

While the purpose of The Open is to find the fittest athletes in each region to move on to Regionals, it’s also an opportunity for any athlete at any level to participate in a worldwide CrossFit community event. It can add meaning and purpose to your training while also bringing the gym community closer together. Almost without fail, The Open is the time of year where we see many people achieve important firsts: bodyweight snatches, muscle ups, toes-to-bars, handstand push-ups, double unders, etc.

Just as important, The Open will also give you some interesting data on your performance in the gym, which can be a guide for setting realistic goals for the following year.

How does The Open work at CrossFit Hoboken?

After the week’s Open workout is released on Thursday evening, that workout becomes Friday’s WOD at CrossFit Hoboken. In other words, whether you register for The Open or not, that’s the workout that we’ll all be hitting on Fridays.

We will hold Friday morning and midday classes at our standard times, but Friday evenings will take on a slightly different look: Instead of registering for a class on Friday evening, you will instead register for a heat time. Heat times won’t be released until after the workout is announced on Thursday evening, so you won’t be able to sign up on MindBody until approximately 9:30 PM on Thursday.

When it’s time for your heat, you should already be warmed up and ready to go. We’ll design warmups and mobility work for you to do, but you’ll be doing them on your own in the Back or Fundamentals Room. We’ll explain the workout in great detail, including movement demonstrations and range of motion standards, you’ll partner up with a friend, and then you and your friend will take turns doing the workout and judging each other. That’s right—everyone will get a score sheet and will be judged during their workout. That means you’ll be held accountable for your movement and each rep will be counted—or not counted if you get a “NO REP!”

After you log your score at games.crossfit.com or via the CrossFit Games app, CrossFit Hoboken will validate it and you will see your name on the global, regional, and gym leaderboards, stacked up next to every other person who signed up for The Open.


What if I can’t make it to a WOD on Friday?

For each week of The Open, we will offer makeup sessions of the Open WOD at the following times:

  • Sunday – 11 AM
  • Monday – 6 AM, 6 PM, 6:30 PM

IMPORTANT NOTE: To have your score validated, you must perform the workout during a designated Open WOD time. If you are unable to make it to any of the designated Open WOD times, please talk to a coach and arrange a time to come in and perform the workout and be judged by that coach.

To kick off The Open season in style, we’re throwing an Open Launch party on the evening of Friday, February 23. We’ll have food, beers, music, and Lululemon will be on site with clothes to try on and buy. One lucky athlete will even win a free outfit! Which brings us to our next point…

Head over to games.crossfit.com and sign up! It’s $20 to register, and be sure to select “CrossFit Hoboken” as your affiliate. Then all of your scores will count towards our gym.

A few years ago we were in the top 5 for most signups among all CrossFit boxes worldwide. Let’s see if we can repeat that again this year!

For many, The Open is the most fun part of the CrossFit year. We see athletes going above and beyond, pushing their limits, doing things they didn’t think possible. And all the while, your gym community is behind you cheering you on.
