How did you hear about CrossFit?
A friend introduced me to the CrossFit main site. My first year of CrossFit I was just following the workouts posted on the main site every day. I learned the movements as they came up in the WODs through the guidance of friends and looking things up on YouTube (ie. What’s a thruster?). It took me a while to realize the following that CrossFit had and that actual “CrossFit boxes” existed.

What were your goals when you started CrossFit?
When I started doing CrossFit I just wanted to lose weight. My goals quickly evolved into learning new skills, lifting more weight, and just getting more fit all around.

How has CrossFit differed from your former training?
Before CrossFit I was on the typical cardio, machines, free weights routine. I would devote so much time to going to the gym but not make any real progress. With CrossFit, I can see measurable and meaningful progress in ways that make my life easier and more fun. I can’t imagine going back to my old ways.

What type of results have you seen with CrossFit?
My first year or two I was making constant progress. I developed new skills like pull ups, weighted pull ups, double unders, handstand push ups, bar muscle ups, etc. None of which I could do before I started CrossFit. Now, I’m at the point where I’m not PRing every workout or every lift every attempt and I’m not learning a new skill every day. But I just keep showing up for an hour most days of the week and trust the programming to make me more fit overall as time goes on as long as I’m putting the right level of intensity in. When I feel like I’ve plateaued or like I’m not seeing progress, I think about where I was when I started and how far I’ve come.

How would you describe your experience at CrossFit Hoboken?
I’ve been at CrossFit Hoboken for about 7 months and it’s been an awesome and welcoming environment. The coaches at CrossFit Hoboken put a lot of effort into making sure that all the athletes are correctly balancing safety with intensity. It’s also great to see the coaches participating in the WODs every now and then.

What would you like to accomplish in the next year in your own fitness?
In the next year, I want to convert to morning workouts, dedicate more time to Olympic lifting, and keep working toward that ring muscle up.

What does a typical day of food look like for you?
I try to prep food for the week on Sundays. It’ll usually include some meats, veggies, and starches. As much as I try to eat realistically healthy, I’ll rarely deprive myself of sweets when the mood strikes!

How did you hear about CrossFit?
At that point I’d been living in Hoboken for a year and I was looking around to join a gym. CrossFit Hoboken is only a few blocks away so I signed up for the free workout. Wasn’t exactly sure what it was all about but it looked fun and I’ve done the standard gym before so figured this would be worth a shot. Needless to say, I’m glad I did.

What were your goals when you started CrossFit?
Goals were to just get stronger and be in shape. I’m not someone that counts calories so wanted to be able to eat whatever I want whenever I want without worrying about it.

How has CrossFit differed from your former training?
It differs a lot. At a standard gym I would be lost and unmotivated and it would be the same routine. At CrossFit you just come in and the workout is already planned with coaches ready to motivate and push you. That part of it really makes this place better than any standard gym workout.

What type of results have you seen with CrossFit?
Since joining I’ve seen my stamina and endurance improve. I’m stronger and able to do things I’ve never thought of doing. From the Olympic lifts to just getting through the WOD which always challenges you. From my first class to my most recent, I have really come a long way. I never thought I was out of shape but after my first WOD you see right away where your fitness level is and I was out of shape.

How would you describe your experience at CrossFit Hoboken
The experience has been great, from the people to the results. I am extremely happy to have joined.

What would you like to accomplish in the next year in your own fitness?
Next year I would like to just come more and be more consistent. I would definitely like to improve on some of the Olympic lifts and increase some of my PRs. I can only improve by coming more so that’s the goal.

What does a typical day of food look like for you?
I start off every morning with a banana, an apple, and a Greek yogurt with granola or fruit. Throughout the day I’ll snack on carrots and nuts. For lunch the usual is ground turkey with mushrooms, peppers, and broccoli but if I don’t bring lunch my options are anywhere from getting a salad to Chick-fil-a. For dinner it’ll be more veggies with maybe chicken or fish or ordering from one of the many options we have in Hoboken. All depends on what I’m feeling and what’s in my fridge.
