How did you hear about CrossFit?
My now husband (Coach) Matt and I were looking for a new gym in Hoboken. I wasn’t living here at the time but I was spending 2-3 days per week by Matt and wanted somewhere to work out while I was here. Matt had suggested that we try this new workout called CrossFit. I had no idea what it was at the time but agreed to go to the Saturday free trial class. We were hooked after one class and immediately signed up for Fundamentals and haven’t looked back since.

What were your goals when you started CrossFit?
I was excited for a new workout routine because I felt like I wasn’t really seeing any results from my current one. I felt like I had plateaued and I was really hoping to get into better physical shape. I was also a little intimidated by everything at first.  I never picked up a barbell prior to starting CrossFit. Olympic lifting and lifting in general was pretty foreign to me.  I could barely lift the 35-lb. barbell when I first started (back then CFH didn’t have the 15 lb. training bars which would have been more my speed!) so getting stronger was another one of my main goals. I also wanted to make sure I was using the proper form and technique when I was performing all of the lifts.

How has CrossFit differed from your former training?
I would spend about 2 hours a day at the gym mostly moving around from one cardio machine to the next and finishing with abs. I didn’t really weight train very much at all. Every now and then I would pick up a pair of 5 lb. dumbbells and do some arms. I thought that I had to focus on cardio in order to obtain my “ideal body.”

What type of results have you seen with CrossFit?
I’m always amazed when I look back at how far I’ve come. My one rep maxes have drastically increased, I’m able to do a lot of gymnastic movements that I couldn’t when I first started (pull ups, bar muscle ups, handstand pushups) and I feel stronger both physically and mentally.

How would you describe your experience at CrossFit Hoboken?
My experience at CrossFit Hoboken has been amazing. I’m actually not a morning person at all so it’s surprising that I’ve been consistently taking the 5:30 a.m. class for the past couple of years. There is such an amazing community at CrossFit Hoboken which I have never seen replicated at any other gym I’ve been a member of. If it wasn’t for the members and coaches I would never have been able to stick with waking up so early every morning to work out. I couldn’t imagine myself working out anywhere else now.

What would you like to accomplish in the next year in your own fitness?
I had been working on ring muscle ups, double unders and getting better at rowing before pregnancy. I self-proclaimed myself the slowest rower in the gym and when your husband who is a coach doesn’t disagree, you know it’s unfortunately true. I had to scale back on those goals since becoming pregnant however I’m hoping to get back at them once the little guy comes!

On top of those previous goals I had for myself, I want to hopefully get back to pre-pregnancy shape and regain my strength.

What does a typical day of food look like for you?
A typical day of food during the week for me would consist of eggs and fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch and chicken, sweet potatoes or brown rice and a veggie for dinner. I’m always a little more lenient on the weekends especially during football/tailgate season.

I haven’t really been sticking to this strict of a regimen since becoming pregnant. I’ve been listening to my body and eating what I feel like I need. I’ve been snacking more and my carb in take is definitely up.

How did you hear about CrossFit?
I moved into the area from Morris Plains, NJ, in November 2016.  CrossFit Hoboken was the closest gym to my apartment so I figured I would give it a shot.  It took me a while to realize that certain gyms in the area were not helping me accomplish my goals.  I finally made the decision to give CrossFit a try and my first WOD was completed the first week of May.  So I have been doing CrossFit for 6 months.

What were your goals when you started CrossFit?
My goals when I started doing CrossFit were to perfect my form, specifically doing Olympic style lifts.  Also I knew the added motivation that came from group classes would force me to work out harder than I was previously doing at a “regular gym.”

How has CrossFit differed from your former training?
CrossFit is drastically different from my previous gym experiences.  My favorite part about doing CrossFit is that I do not need to go in with a plan. All I have to do is focus on the execution and the coaches will take care of the rest.  My previous workouts were more isolated to focusing on one or two muscle groups a day.  I love the total body aspect that CrossFit brings to the table.

What type of results have you seen with CrossFit?
My stamina has been the biggest change since my first month of workouts at CrossFit Hoboken. Early on I would have to scale the WODs or I would use the bare minimum in weight. Recently I feel like my form has improved and thus I have started to increase the weight that I am putting up.

How would you describe your experience at CrossFit Hoboken?
CrossFit Hoboken has been a great experience.  I find myself waking up early on weekend mornings to make sure I don’t miss a workout.  Also not being lazy and procrastinating after work and staying focused.

What would you like to accomplish in the next year in your own fitness?
In the next year with CrossFit Hoboken I hope to continue to build good relationships.  On a micro level, I need to work on handstand push-ups, double unders, and bar muscle ups.

What does a typical day of food look like for you?
A typical day of food starts with eggs, usually scrambled mixed in with some brown rice. Lunch is usually a sandwich from a local deli.  Dinner can be chicken or steak with sweet potatoes. I eat a decent amount of fish and my guilty pleasure is a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza.
